Recently, I got my first suppressor through Silencer Central. They have a program that ships it right to your front door.
No going into the gun store at all. Everything is done online and at your house.
The process was smooth and easy, so I want to walk you through it.
Also, wait times are oddly short right now. It used to take months to get your tax stamp approved, but now it’s taking days to weeks.
If you ever thought of getting a suppressor, now is the time.
Full disclosure: This was part of a promo through one of my writing gigs, so I received the suppressor and tax stamp at no cost. Unlike normal partnerships, though, they didn’t ask me to talk about it in exchange. I’m doing so because this is cool!
The promo didn’t change my process either, so yours will look like what I describe below.
BUYING THE SUPPRESSOR:
11/05: Step one was to go to the Silencer Central website and create an account. After the account was created, I chose the suppressor I wanted and placed an order.
The same day, a serial number was assigned to my order, and the application paperwork was generated. I received an email asking me to e-sign the application.
I also got a welcome text asking if I wanted to sign up for text alerts about my status.
FILLING OUT THE PAPERWORK:
11/08: A few days later, I received a text and email asking me to upload a passport-style photo. They provide instructions on how to do this yourself with your phone.
11/11: I submitted my photo and received a text and email confirmation. This was easy to do, but it took me a few days because I was busy.
I also checked the site to see that my fingerprints were pending, which means they’d mailed me a fingerprint kit. The tracker they provide is really cool.
FINGERPRINTS:
11/12: I got my fingerprint kit.
11/13: Did my fingerprints after going through their tutorial and mailed them back the same day.
11/19: I received an email to say everything has been received, and I can set up my ATF username and PIN and certification appointment, so I did and got an appointment the next day.
CERTIFICATION + ATF:
11/20: I went through the 10-minute certification appointment. The rep shares their screen and asks you to verify that all info is correct. Then they give you access to check that it is and enter the PIN that you previously set up before they submit.
Lastly, they give very clear instructions on what happens from here. It took less than 10 minutes for one suppressor.
I received an email and text confirmation that everything was submitted.
11/27: I received the coveted “APPROVED” status email along with a link to go in and complete my Form 4473.
Next, they must notify your local law enforcement and start the waiting period.
SHIPPING:
12/09: I got an email saying they were preparing to ship.
12/16: It shipped!
12/18: The suppressor arrived on my doorstep 🥳
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Overall, I think this took a little bit longer than going into the store and using the kiosk. I’m unsure how much longer because I haven’t gone through that process yet, but I probably should for research purposes!
If you don’t have a store with a kiosk near you or you just like doing things at home, this is a great option. I would definitely do it again, especially with the short approval wait times we’re seeing.
Let me know if you have any questions about the process or if you want to hear more about my experience with the suppressor so far.
Have a great weekend and stay casual+tactical.
