The following questions will save you time and costly mistakes when buying your first or your next gun.
How will you use it? Guns serve different purposes, so first you need to determine how you’ll use them.
Home defense, concealed carry, just fun to shoot? Clarifying this will narrow down your search so it’s not overwhelming.
What’s your budget? Guns are an investment that should last you a long time. While I don’t believe everyone needs a $2500 Gucci Glock, I do know that most of the time, you get what you pay for.
Keep your budget in mind while searching, and consider saving up money. It’s worth spending a few extra bucks on something reliable from a trusted manufacturer.
Prioritize reliability. If you’re new to guns, you might think everything on the market today is reliable, and you’d be wrong, sadly.
There are countless shitty options and many of them are in the low-budget category. Stick with manufacturers that have a long track record of quality.
Function over form. As a design and style geek, I know it’s tempting to buy the dopest-looking thing, but for guns, that might not be the best choice.
If it’s your first (or carry) firearm, you want something that operates as intended, is easy to clean and maintain, and isn’t picky about ammo or magazines.
Is it the one for you? It’s ok to take suggestions from trusted friends and family, but remember this choice is highly personal. Ask for recommendations and then do your own research, including shooting the gun before you purchase.
Most ranges have a wide variety of rentals for $10-$20. If you’re brand new, take a class with a quality instructor who has several options for you to try.
